1. Motivation

It’s day five, and I’m writing this instead of a sketch because I’m behind a day and I have many, many more interesting things to do. I’m willing to bet that you feel this way too, or at least you will at some point in the next 25 days.

So the question is, how do we stay motivated?

We want to write sketches. We bother with this month, this thing we made up, because if all of our friends commit to writing, by damn, we might as well put in the effort too. We want to.

But then life happens, and even when life is as mundane as eating a burrito in a park on a nice day, it’s more exciting than sitting inside, listening to the fan in your computer whirr as your cursor blinks, mocking you. (That might be a bad example; burritos are incredible, always)

Whenever life seems more enticing, and I’m just about to give up on my bit about dogs at a poop-tasting (like people at a wine-tasting), I just ask myself: is this something I want to do?

And I let myself say no. Because if I don’t really want to do it, the sketch won’t be good. Neither will the experience. You do, as a writer, have to break down and work through parts that try your nerves and make you question yourself. But if you actively and continually decide to work against the grain, you’ll forget what you love about doing this.

So, go out and live a little. Go take a walk. Go out drinking. Go hang out for awhile. Get the extra cheese and tomatillo sauce. (I really want a burrito)

Live life, because you can’t get rid of your distractions by ignoring them.

Then, write. Even a little bit. You can pick yourself up tomorrow, if you need to.
